The Problem

In a crowded streaming market, users often face choice paralysis, difficulty finding new content, and a lack of personalized experiences. The challenge was to design a streaming app that feels both familiar and fresh, making content discovery enjoyable and managing user preferences straightforward.

‎The core problem I aimed to solve was: How might we create a mobile streaming experience that simplifies content navigation, offers clear personalization options, and presents a vast library in an engaging, user-friendly manner.

Design Goals

  • Engaging Content Discovery: Make it easy and enjoyable for users to find new movies and TV shows.

  •  Intuitive Personalization: Provide clear controls for profile management and viewing preferences.

  • Seamless Playback & Settings: Ensure users can easily manage their viewing experience and app settings.

 Key UX Solutions

Dynamic Home Screen: Personalized Content Showcase

‎The Home screen prioritizes personalized content and trending titles to immediately engage the user.

Solution A

Hero Content Display: A large, prominent banner at the top features compelling title with clear "Stream Now" call-to-action. This immediately highlights new or featured content.

Solution B

Curated Rows: Implemented standard, yet effective, horizontally scrolling rows like "Your Recommendations," "Trending Now," and "New to the Service." This pattern is familiar to users and allows for endless content categories, supporting easy discoverability.

Solution C

Continue Watching: Placed the "Continue watching" row higher on the secondary home screen (to ensure users can quickly jump back into their ongoing shows, a key feature for retention.

Explore & Search: Streamlined Content Discovery

‎To combat choice paralysis, I designed the "Explore" screen for quick browsing and the "Search" for direct lookup.

Solution A:

Categorical Filters: Provided clear "All Genres," "TV Shows," and "Movies" buttons on the Explore screen for initial content filtering. Organized content into digestible rows like "New Releases," "Critically-Acclaimed," and "Mind-Bending Thrillers," allowing users to browse by mood or popularity.

Solution B:

Prominent Search Bar: A dedicated search bar at the top of the "Explore" screen ensures quick access for users who know what they're looking for.

The "Profile" screen consolidates personal account details (email, password), subscription status, and viewing preferences (language, subtitles, playback) in logical groupings. This minimizes hunting for essential information.

Solution C:

Multi-Profile Management: The "Who's Watching?" screen supports multiple user profiles, critical feature for family accounts, improving personalized recommendations and tracking.

The "Settings" screen neatly categorizes controls into "General Settings" (App Language, Theme), "Playback & Download Settings" (Streaming Quality, Download Quality, Wi-Fi only), and "Account & Security," making it easy for users to customize their experience.
